  • KODE Art Museums

    KODE Art Museums

Four connected buildings on a lakeside plaza holding one of Scandinavia's largest art collections — Munch, J.C. Dahl, and the composer homes of Edvard Grieg.

🇳🇴Flåm

Norway

Norwegian Krone (NOK)

Norwegian · English widely spoken

A tiny village at the head of the Aurlandsfjord, ringed by 1,400 m cliffs and waterfalls. Home to the Flåm Railway and ferries into the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord.

Highlights

  • Flåm Railway

Often called one of the world's most beautiful train rides — 20 km of switchbacks, tunnels, and waterfalls climbing from sea level to 867 m at Myrdal in about an hour.

  • Nærøyfjord cruise

A two-hour electric ferry through the narrowest fjord in Europe — sheer 1,000 m walls, abandoned farmsteads, and ribbon waterfalls. UNESCO World Heritage.

  • Stegastein viewpoint

A 30 m cantilevered wood-and-steel platform that juts out 650 m above the Aurlandsfjord. The drive up is a series of hairpins through alpine pasture.

  • Ægir BrewPub

A timber stave-church-styled brewpub at the water's edge. The Viking-themed tasting plank pairs award-winning local beers with smoked elk, salmon, and reindeer.

Layers — fjord mornings can be 8 °C even in June.

🇩🇰Copenhagen

Denmark

Danish Krone (DKK)

Danish · English widely spoken

Denmark's capital is a low-rise harbor city built for biking and slow afternoons. Expect candle-lit cafés, design shops, and a strong sense of hygge — that cozy in-between of comfort and conversation.

Highlights

  • Nyhavn

The postcard canal lined with 17th-century townhouses in mustard, terracotta, and salmon. Hans Christian Andersen lived at no. 67. Best at golden hour.

  • Tivoli Gardens

The world's second-oldest amusement park (1843) — wooden roller coasters, lantern-lit gardens, and Friday-night concerts. Inspired Walt Disney directly.

  • Freetown Christiania

A self-governed hippie commune founded in 1971 on a former military base. Murals, hand-built houses, vegan cafés — no photos on Pusher Street.

  • Reffen Street Food

Container-village food market on the old shipyard island. 40+ stalls of global street food, harbor swims, and sunset DJ sets in summer.

  • Designmuseum Danmark

Housed in a rococo former hospital, the chair gallery alone — Wegner, Jacobsen, Panton — is worth the visit. A masterclass in Danish modern.

Rent bikes — the city is flat and bike lanes are everywhere.

🇳🇴Oslo

Norway

Norwegian Krone (NOK)

Norwegian · English widely spoken

Tucked between forested hills and a long fjord, Oslo balances sleek architecture with easy access to nature. The new waterfront — Opera House, MUNCH, Astrup Fearnley — is where the city shows off.

Highlights

  • Oslo Opera House

An iceberg of white marble that slides into the fjord — you can walk straight up its sloping roof for free. The interior is wrapped in warm oak ribbing.

  • Vigeland Park

The world's largest sculpture park by a single artist — 200+ Gustav Vigeland bronzes and granites depicting the full human life cycle. Open and free 24/7.

  • Munch Museum

A leaning 13-storey tower on the waterfront holding the world's largest Munch collection — including three versions of The Scream rotated for preservation.

  • Holmenkollbakken

A 134 m steel ski jump perched above the city, with a ski museum at its base and a viewing deck at the top. The Oslo Metro climbs almost to the door.

  • Bygdøy peninsula

    Bygdøy peninsula

A leafy museum peninsula reached by a 10-minute ferry — the Fram polar ship, Kon-Tiki raft, and an open-air folk museum with a 13th-century stave church.

Bring a light jacket even in June — evenings cool fast near the fjord.

🇸🇪Stockholm

Sweden

Swedish Krona (SEK)

Swedish · English widely spoken

Stockholm spreads across 14 islands, so every walk crosses water. Gamla Stan's medieval lanes contrast with Södermalm's vintage shops and the design-heavy showrooms of Östermalm.

Highlights

  • Gamla Stan

The 13th-century old town on its own island — cobbled lanes, ochre facades, and the Royal Palace. Duck into Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, just 90 cm wide.

  • Vasa Museum

A 64-gun warship that sank on her 1628 maiden voyage and was raised 333 years later — 98% intact. The custom-built hall lets you circle her at every deck.

  • Fotografiska

A converted brick customs house on Stadsgården dedicated to contemporary photography. Open late, with a top-floor restaurant overlooking the harbor.

  • Skansen open-air museum

The world's first open-air museum (1891) — 150 historic Swedish buildings reassembled on a hill, plus a Nordic zoo with wolves, bears, and reindeer.

  • Stockholm archipelago

30,000 islands stretching east into the Baltic. Day-trip ferries from Strömkajen reach Vaxholm, Grinda, or Sandhamn for swimming, kayaks, and red cottages.

Sweden is nearly cashless — bring a contactless card.

🇫🇮Helsinki

Finland

Euro (€)

Finnish · Swedish · English widely spoken

Helsinki feels younger and quieter than its Nordic siblings — saunas, sea views, and a fierce sense of design. In June the sun barely sets, so plan for long, soft evenings.

A 25-block walkable zone around Esplanadi with 200+ design shops, Marimekko flagship, ceramics studios, and the Design Museum at its heart.

  • Suomenlinna sea fortress

A UNESCO 18th-century sea fortress spread over six islands, 15 minutes by public ferry. Tunnels, cannons, cafés, and a working dry dock.

  • Oodi central library

A wave-roofed timber-and-glass library opposite Parliament. Top floor is a cloud-lit reading room; lower floors have 3D printers, sewing machines, and game rooms.

  • Market Square

The harborfront square where you'll find berry stalls, cinnamon buns, salmon soup, and the orange tents of fishermen selling straight from their boats.

Try a public sauna — it's the most local thing you can do.
